SUMMARY:Plant Sciences Initiative: Accelerating Discovery and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:GES Colloquium | YouTube: LIVE STREAM \nPlant Sciences Initiative: An Opportunity to Accelerate Discovery and Innovation\nSpeaker:\nStephen Briggs\, Launch Director\, NC PSI (link)\nPSI website: cals.ncsu.edu/initiatives/plant-sciences-initiative/ \nAbstract:\nThis colloquium will feature an overview of the mission and vision of the NC Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI)\, with a focus on the education experiences available to students involved with PSI. \nThe vision for the student experience in the PSI aligns closely with the goals of the AgBioFEWS NRT Traineeship Program that will be underway soon. The final benefit for the student will be to have acquired a more interdisciplinary skill set to tackle the grand challenge of our world: to feed a population of 9-10 billion people by the year 2050. \nBio:\nSteve Briggs joined NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in August 2017 as the NC Plant Sciences Initiative (NC PSI) Launch Director. As Launch Director\, Briggs has oversight of the 184\,000 square foot PSI Building\, is assembling the inaugural research project teams\, and developing partnerships that will establish North Carolina as a world leader in plant sciences. Prior to joining NC State\, he was the Senior Vice President of Agronomy and Corporate Marketing for South Dakota Wheat Growers (SDWG)\, the largest farmer owned cooperative in the United States. \nSteve’s career began as an Extension Entomologist at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. From there he joined American Cyanamid Company (AmCy) in Des Moines\, Iowa\, where he rose to the position of Vice President and General Manager of Specialty Products\, concentrating in non-crop businesses such as pest control\, turf\, and forestry. He has also held senior executive positions at BASF\, Cheminova\, and TyraTech. \nSteve has served as chairman of two boards – Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment (RISE) and Consolidated Sourcing Solutions (CSS) – and as an ex-officio member of the Strategic Outlook Committee for CropLife America. He also has served on the boards of numerous agricultural organizations\, and is currently a member of the Security Seed and Chemical Board in Clarksville\, TN.

SUMMARY:Darby Orcutt - Scholarly Identity for an Interdisciplinary and Engaged Career
DESCRIPTION:GES Colloquium | YouTube: LIVE STREAM \nScholarly Identity for an Interdisciplinary & Engaged Career\nSpeaker:\nDarby Orcutt\, Assistant Head\, Collections & Research Strategy\, NCSU Libraries (link\, Twitter @Darby_Librarian) \nAbstract:\nManaging one’s scholarly identity has never been perfectly straightforward and easy to do\, but it can be especially challenging for researchers and scholars who cross disciplinary boundaries and whose research outputs may include work outside the traditional peer-reviewed article. Indeed\, we are preaching to the choir when speaking to those active in the Genetic Engineering & Society Center about the vital importance of engaging with diverse academic\, professional\, and public audiences and producing research outputs that can have tremendous impact on policy and public perception. \nControlling one’s own presentation of scholarly identity is especially important in this context\, rather than simply relying on traditional academic indexes and measures. As interdisciplinarity and public engagement become more and more central from the perspectives of funders and research institutions\, we also should all have an informed stake in how these activities are counted and represented. In this colloquium session\, we hope to raise significant questions and provoke intentional conversation around these issues\, conversations that may be especially important for Ph.D. students and faculty mentors to have across the Center’s disciplines. \nWe will also share one of the NCSU Libraries’ initiatives to encourage use of ORCID for maintaining the list of your works. We will talk about the benefits of using ORCID\, how it relates to alternatives like Google Scholar or ResearchGate\, how it fits into researcher workflows\, and introduce the services the Libraries provides to help you get started or update your ORCID profile. \nBio:\nDarby Orcutt is Assistant Head\, Collections & Research Strategy\, NCSU Libraries; Faculty\, University Honors Program; Affiliated Faculty\, Center for Innovative Management Studies; and Affiliated Faculty\, Genetic Engineering & Society Center. A professional enabler of interdisciplinary team research\, his library work\, teaching\, and research cluster around themes of facilitating cultural understanding and academic collaboration across diverse disciplines\, industries\, and publics.

SUMMARY:Katie Barnhill-Dilling & Dalton George - Responsible Research & Innovation in Action: Tales from the Front Lines
DESCRIPTION:GES Colloquium | YouTube: LIVE STREAM \nResponsible Research & Innovation in Action: Tales from the Front Lines\nSpeakers:\nDr. Katie Barnhill-Dilling\, Postdoctoral Research Scholar (email\, Twitter @barnhilldilling) and Dalton George\, PhD Candidate (email) \nAbstract:\nResponsible research and innovation (RRI) is an increasingly applied normative framework for the governance of emerging technologies. However\, meaningful implementation of RRI principles can be challenging\, particularly with respect to upstream stakeholder and community engagement. The Safe Genes NCSU project\, “Restoring Ecosystems and Biodiversity through Development of Safe and Effective Gene Drive Technologies\,” has been designed with RRI in mind. The project attends specifically to regulatory\, stakeholder\, and community engagement\, as well as risk assessment\, in parallel with its technological and biological tasks. In other words\, stakeholders and communities are being engaged as the technology is still being developed. What sorts of challenges and opportunities does this approach to a project present? What can we learn about the implementation of Responsible Research & Innovation that may serve future projects? \nBio\nDr. Barnhill-Dilling is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University where she serves as Project Coordinator for the Safe Genes project entitled “Restoring Ecosystems and Biodiversity through Development of Safe and Effective Gene Drive Technologies.” Using the analytical tools of Science\, Technology\, & Society and Environmental Justice\, her research explores the governance of genetic engineering for biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration with a particular focus on community\, stakeholder\, and public engagement. She earned her PhD in Forestry & Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University in May 2018\, and was a 2016-17 NSF IGERT Fellow with the GES Center.
