SUMMARY:Sean B. Carroll - Brave Genius: A Scientist’s Journey from the French Resistance to the Nobel Prize
DESCRIPTION:Brave Genius: A Scientist’s Journey from the French Resistance to the Nobel Prize\nAbout this event\nThe Genetics and Genomics Academy is excited to host Sean B. Carroll for a discussion and lecture drawing from his book Brave Genius: A Scientist\, a Philosopher\, and Their Daring Adventures from the French Resistance to the Nobel Prize about the lives and work of biochemist Jacques Monod and philosopher Albert Camus during the Nazi occupation of France. This will be from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm in Hunt Library with a reception and Q&A session to follow. This event is open to the public and you do not have to have read Brave Genius to attend. \nABSTRACT:\nIn the spring of 1940\, the zoology graduate student Jacques Monod and the aspiring but unknown writer Albert Camus were quietly pursuing ordinary\, separate lives in Paris. After the German invasion and occupation of France\, each joined the Resistance to help liberate the country from the Nazis\, ascended to prominent\, dangerous roles\, and were very lucky to survive. After the war and through twists of circumstance\, they became friends\, and through their passionate determination and rare talent they emerged as leading voices of modern literature and biology\, each receiving the Nobel Prize in their respective fields. Brave Genius is a story of the transformation of ordinary lives into exceptional lives by extraordinary events – of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity\, the flowering of creative genius\, deep friendship\, and of profound concern for and insight into the human condition. \nSean B. Carroll is a world-renowned researcher in the field of evolutionary developmental biology\, as well as an active science communicator! His other books include A Series of Fortunate Events\, Endless Forms Most Beautiful\, Remarkable Creatures\, and The Serengeti Rules. He is also head of HHMI’s Tangled Bank Studios\, which has produced several award-winning films including the Emmy-winning “The Serengeti Rules” based on his book of the same name and the recent Oscar Nominee “All That Breathes”. \nFor more information about Sean B. SUMMARY:Kiera O'Donnell - Understanding the Dynamics of Post-Hurricane Shoreline Protection Decisions | GES Colloquium (ZOOM)
DESCRIPTION:Colloquium Home | Zoom Registration | GES Video Library (current) | Video Archives | Podcast | @GESCenterNCSU | Newsletter \nUnderstanding the Dynamics of Post-Hurricane Shoreline Protection Decisions\nDr. Kiera O’Donnell\, Postdoctoral Associate\, Biology\, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences\, Duke University\nGooge Scholar | Twitter @ODonnellKiera93 \nInsights into the complex factors that shape people’s perceptions of their environment and their decisions around shoreline protection. \nAbstract\nCoastal communities around the world face a growing threat from rising sea levels\, more severe storms\, and droughts. To address these challenges\, many have turned to natural and nature-based features (NNBF) as a means of reducing hazard exposure while also providing important environmental and social benefits. Despite their many advantages\, however\, a significant number of waterfront property owners continue to opt for hardened infrastructure to protect their shorelines. Kiera O’Donnell investigated the aftermath of two hurricanes to gain insight into the dynamics between people and their environment in the context of shoreline protection. While both communities surveyed showed an awareness of the protective properties of NNBF\, a majority chose hardened infrastructure as their preferred option. Her study sheds new light on the complex factors that influence decision-making in the face of environmental hazards\, and highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics to ensure effective and sustainable solutions. \nSpeaker Bio\nKiera O’Donnell earned her PhD in 2022 from Northeastern where she worked with Dr. Steven Scyphers and was a member of his Social-Ecological Sustainability lab. Her dissertation research focused on the landscape and social outcomes of Hurricane Irma in the lower Florida Keys and Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle. Kiera holds a BS degree in Oceanography from the University of New England and previously worked at NOAA as a data analyst for sea level and storms. \n\nGES Colloquium (GES 591-002) is jointly taught by Drs. Jen Baltzegar and Dawn Rodriguez-Ward\, who you may contact with any class-specific questions. Colloquium will generally be live-streamed via Zoom\, with monthly in-person meetings in the 1911 Building\, room 129. Please subscribe to the GES newsletter and Twitter for updates .

Participants each receive a $30 Amazon gift card\, Free Lunch & a chance to win a Wolfpack sweatshirt. \nREGISTER ON EVENTBRITE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUndergraduate and graduate students will be placed into interdisciplinary teams based on the what kinds of innovation interests them. Each team will have a coach trained in interdisciplinary innovation and together\, teams will develop pitches for a hypothetical technology that will solve a real-world global problem. A panel of judges will throw in a variety of challenges to ensure that the innovations are meeting sustainable and socially responsible criteria. Teams will have the opportunity to make improvements or changes to their pitch and in the end\, the panel of judges will present awards in different categories. \nDownload Flyer >  |  Download eBillboard > \nProgram sponsored and organized by The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC)\, the NC State Biotechnology Program (BIT)\, and the Genetic Engineering and Society (GES) Center as part of the BioMADE “Educating the Current and Future Bioindustrial Workforce: Molecular Biology\, Bioprocessing Fundamentals\, and Responsible Innovation” grant.
