Bio
Dr. Katie Barnhill is a social scientist, exploring just environmental decision-making. Most recently, Katie served as a postdoctoral research scholar at NC State in the Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources. Broadly, her research focuses on engaging diverse communities and stakeholders in complex environmental and natural resource governance questions. She explores the politics and social science around emerging applications of biotechnology in biodiversity conservation and restoration. She has experience in community-based research, and in co-constructing research agenda with Indigenous environmental leaders.
Katie’s work is situation at an intersection of Science, Technology, and Society studies — in particular public engagement with science and technology — and Environmental Justice. As a critical scholar, her primary focus is on qualitative methodologies, including in-depth interviews, focus group facilitation, and participant observation, while also deploying quantitative methods to gain perspective on broader trends.
