Abstract

Curious about how public engagement influences food safety policies? What role can researchers play in shaping policy through the public comment process? Andrew Pugliese shares his experience receiving and responding to public comments on proposed regulations, exploring the dynamics that influence food safety policies, and shedding light on the process and implications.

Speaker Bio

Andrew Pugliese is currently with the Food Safety Inspection Service, where he is the Director of the Policy Analysis Staff, PAS, within the Office of Policy and Program Development. The Policy Analysis Staff supports the Food Safety and Inspection Services by developing and conducting sound and consistent economic analysis of preliminary, final and existing Agency regulations and policies, identifying regulatory alternatives, economic and social impacts, and establishing consistency with Agency policy. Mr. Pugliese has participated in the development of cost-benefit analysis for several regulations, including the Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection, the Revision of the Nutrition Facts Labels for Meat and Poultry Products, Condemnation of Poultry Carcasses Affect With Any Form of Avian Leukosis Complex. Andrew holds a master’s degree in agricultural and applied economics from the University of Missouri and has previously worked at the Foreign Agricultural Service, Forest Service, and Peace Corps.


GES Colloquium is jointly taught by Drs. Jen Baltzegar and Dawn Rodriguez-Ward, who you may contact with any class-specific questions. Colloquium will be held in person in the 1911 Building, room 129, and live-streamed via Zoom.
