Consolidation and Innovation in AgBiotech: Exploring Perspectives on Two Interdisciplinary Topics

Speakers: AgBioFEWS NRT Fellows, Cohort 1, NC State University

Website | Twitter #AgBioFEWS

Description: Discussion of two questions from current literature review: is it possible to isolate the specific effects of individual GM traits in trends of farming practices; and whether/why blocks exist that prevent useful, translatable research work from making it to application in the field of agbiotech

Abstract

We are in the midst of literature review for two research questions that we are pursuing as a cohort. The first question is whether it is possible to isolate the specific effects of individual GM traits in trends of farming practices, particularly consolidation in geography, management, and ownership of farms. The second question is whether and why blocks exist that prevent genuinely useful, translatable work generated in primary research labs from making it to application in the field of agbiotech. We will present a brief summary of the evolution of these topics, but our primary goal at this colloquium is to solicit ideas from the audience about important areas of research we may be missing in our review efforts.

Speakers

We are the first cohort of AgBioFEWS NRT fellows. We represent a mix of expertise in physical and social sciences, and are currently working together to develop cooperative research projects.
